Floods in Iran have affected the lives of "at least 12 million citizens"

The UN Information Portal, citing the European Commission, says that floods, overflowing rivers, and problems caused by rainfall in recent weeks have affected the lives of at least 12 million citizens across Iran.

 

On Wednesday morning, the Iranian Red Crescent Organization announced that 11 provinces are currently facing problems caused by flooding and waterlogging.

In Iran, the death toll from floods in Golestan province has increased to at least 11 after a citizen drowned in the rushing waters of a flood near the port of Turkmen.

12 million people affected by the "worst disaster" in 15 years

According to a report published on the ReliefWeb website - a UN-affiliated information portal - citing the European Commission, floods, overflowing rivers, and problems caused by rainfall in recent weeks have affected the lives of 12 million citizens.

The European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection says this event is the worst natural disaster to occur in Iran in the past 15 years and has spread to 2,000 cities and towns in 31 provinces.

The information portal of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that two million citizens are in need of humanitarian assistance and more than half a million people have been forced to leave their homes.

According to Iranian government officials, the floods of recent weeks have caused more than $1 billion in damage to agricultural land, infrastructure, and historical monuments.

At the same time, Italy has joined the ranks of countries that have sent humanitarian aid to Iran. According to the country's Foreign Ministry, the aid includes 40 tons of essential items.

According to ReliefWeb, the European Commission has currently allocated €1.2 million in humanitarian aid to Iran.

Austria, the Czech Republic, France, and Slovakia are among other European countries that have offered assistance to flood victims in Iran.

The number of victims in Golestan Province increased

The death toll from the flood in Golestan Province has increased to at least 11 after a citizen drowned in the flowing waters of the flood near the port of Turkmen.

On the morning of Wednesday, April 18, the state-run IRNA news agency reported, quoting Elias Hivechi, the governor of Bandar Turkmen city, that the body of a citizen who had recently lost his life had been found.

According to reports, the citizen fell into a flood channel in one of the villages.

As of April 15, the Iranian Forensic Medicine Organization had put the death toll from the floods across Iran at 76.

Areas of Golestan Province were among the starting points of a crisis that has spread to various other cities and provinces across Iran in recent weeks, early in Nowruz.

On Wednesday morning, the Iranian Red Crescent Organization announced that 11 provinces are currently facing problems caused by flooding and waterlogging: Ilam, South Khorasan, Razavi and North, Zanjan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Fars, Kerman, Golestan, Hormozgan, and Yazd.

According to the head of the Iranian Red Crescent, this organization provided relief to 14,102 people between April 14 and 17.
