Asylum and Immigration

The number of Iranians migrating to Europe via Serbia has increased a hundredfold.

Some reports indicate that the number of Iranians entering Europe via Serbia with the intention of migrating has increased significantly.

A report published in the Sarajevo Times on Sunday, September 8, says that the number of Iranians who first fly to Serbia on tourist visas and then migrate to Europe has increased at an unprecedented rate.

According to the publication, last year only 16 Iranians entered Serbia through this route, while since the beginning of this year their number has increased to 1,647.

The newspaper reported that the increase in the number of Iranians migrating to Europe via Serbia is the result of an agreement signed a year ago between Serbia and the Islamic Republic of Iran that lifted visa requirements for Iranian nationals. Since then, more than 20,000 people from Iran have traveled to Serbia.
