The son of Mohammad Nourizad, a political prisoner in Iran, was sentenced to more than 4 years in prison.

Ali Nourizad, the son of Mohammad Nourizad, a political prisoner in Iran, was sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison by the Revolutionary Court.

According to news published on social media, on Tuesday, May 26, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, headed by Iman Afshari, issued a verdict sentencing Ali Nourizad to 4 years and 2 months in prison and 2 years of disqualification from membership in political parties, groups, and factions on charges such as "gathering and colluding with the intention of committing a crime against national security by participating in the January 2019 gatherings," "propaganda activity against the regime," and "insulting the leadership."

This sentence was issued to Ali Nourizad while, according to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, which states that sentences can be combined, if this sentence is confirmed by the Court of Appeal, only 3 years and 6 months will be applicable as the maximum sentence.

According to available information, this verdict was issued in absentia and was served on Mr. Nourizad on Tuesday when he appeared before the Revolutionary Court. Mr. Nourizad was also acquitted of the charge of insulting the Leader, which he had previously faced.

Davoud Farhadpour, a civil activist living in Tehran, also announced on his Instagram that the ruling was issued to pressure the authorities of the Islamic Republic against imprisoned civil activist Mohammad Nourizad and force him to remain silent.

Mohammad Nourizad, one of the signatories of the letter of resignation of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, who has been in detention since August 12, 2019, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Sunday, April 1, by a verdict issued by Branch 35 of the Court of Appeals of Khorasan Razavi Province on charges of "membership in groups opposed to the regime with the intention of disrupting the security of the country," "propaganda activity against the regime," and "establishing and managing a Telegram channel with the intention of disrupting the security of the country." He is currently serving his sentence in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.

According to available information, Ali Nourizad was previously arrested on January 11, 2019, during protests against the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. After some time, on February 13 of the same year, he was temporarily released from prison after posting bail pending the completion of the legal proceedings.

It is also worth noting that this is not the first time that the Islamic Republic has sentenced one of the detainees of the January 2019 protests to prison. Previously, the Voice of America had announced in a report that five citizens of Amol, named Shura Fekri, Meysam Khalili, Mohsen Rezaei, Salman Farrokhi, and another person with the surname Raei, who were arrested during the January 2019 protests, were sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to a total of 30 months in prison.

On Friday, April 10, the 100th day since the crash of the passenger plane in Iran, US State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a Twitter message: "100 days ago, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted and shot down Flight PS752, killing 176 passengers and crew."
