Iran's response to new US sanctions

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman called the new sanctions against Iran “contrary to the seriousness and alleged good faith.” The sanctions were imposed after Iran presented two draft proposals in the continuation of the JCPOA negotiations.

Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, reacted immediately after the news of US sanctions against Iran was published, writing in a Twitter message that the US will not stop imposing sanctions on Iran even in the midst of the Vienna talks.

Khatibzadeh's Twitter message stated, "Washington is unable to understand that the campaign of 'maximum defeat' and 'diplomatic opening' contradict each other and that 'intensifying sanctions contradicts the seriousness and alleged goodwill.'"

The United States on Tuesday, December 7, sanctioned eight individuals and four entities, including the NAJA Special Unit and the Provincial Guard Special Forces, for human rights violations and the suppression of protesters.

The new sanctions have been imposed despite high-ranking Iranian officials repeatedly saying that their main goal in participating in the JCPOA negotiations in Vienna is to lift sanctions.

Ali Bahadori Jahromi, a spokesman for the Iranian government, said on the Khabar Network's "Titer Emsbah" program that the Iranian government is "seriously pursuing the neutralization of sanctions."

The government spokesman did not provide further details about how the Raisi government is trying to “lift sanctions.” He continued by saying, “The government is seeking to circumvent sanctions through various strategies.”

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said regarding the ongoing negotiations in Vienna that the Islamic Republic is serious in these negotiations and that the negotiating team's decisive effort is to lift the sanctions imposed on Iran.

He did not elaborate on what Iran has done or will do to lift the sanctions.

The Iranian delegation in Vienna has presented two draft proposals to the nuclear deal negotiators.

Western countries present at the Vienna talks, including Germany, said Iran's proposals violated previous agreements and left "no basis" for a successful conclusion to the talks.
