A report of a prisoner's fingers being amputated

HRANA News Agency – In September of this year, the sentence to amputate the fingers of a prisoner accused of theft was carried out in prison. The sentence to amputate the fingers is one of the sentences that deny human dignity and continues to be carried out in Iran, regardless of domestic and foreign protests.
According to HRANA, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, the verdict to amputate the fingers of a person accused of theft was carried out in Evin Prison on September 4 of this year.
HRANA has identified this prisoner as Morteza Jalili.
Mr. Jalili is accused of several thefts, including the theft of the home of the Friday prayer imam of Shiraz.
He is being held in Ward 6, Hall 18 of Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, and was transferred to Evin Prison in September of this year to serve his sentence. On September 4, after the execution of the sentence, four fingers on the prisoner's right hand were finally amputated in accordance with the court's verdict.
It should be noted that the amputation of a hand is one of the cases that violates the principle of human dignity. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights explicitly prohibits the use of inhuman and degrading punishments, but Iran continues to carry out such punishments regardless of domestic and international protests.
On Wednesday, July 2, 2022, a spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office called on Iran to review its penal laws as soon as possible and refrain from carrying out sentences such as amputation, flogging, and stoning.
In this statement, Ravina Shamdasani, the spokesperson for the office, reacted to the imminent execution of the sentence to amputate the fingers of eight prisoners and called for the execution of these sentences to be canceled.
Ms. Shamdasani said that the identities of seven of these prisoners have been identified as Hadi Rostami, Mehdi Sharafian, Mehdi Shahivand, Amir Shirmard, Morteza Jalili, Ebrahim Rafiei, and Yaghoub Fazeli Koushki.
