Production of ‘The Resurrection of Christ’ Film Begins After 16 Years

Mel Gibson announced the filming of the movie “The Resurrection of Christ” after 16 years in 2026.

Mel Gibson, who has “The Passion of the Christ” in his filmography, intended to make a sequel to this film titled “The Resurrection of Christ,” which has been postponed several times. The filming of this movie was initially scheduled to begin in 2023, but was then postponed to 2024 and most recently to 2025. However, Mel Gibson, while confirming the official title of the film, announced the start of filming in 2026. He also announced that “Jim Caviezel,” who played Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ,” will reprise his role as Jesus.

While expressing hope that the start of filming will not be delayed again, he said: “I don’t have a start date to announce, I just need to begin pre-production and see what happens. This film requires its own time, and the key factor that has caused ‘The Resurrection of Christ’ to be postponed is which version of the screenplay will be used for the film.”

In this screenplay, which was completed in 2024, the focus is on the events of the three days between the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ,” also announced in an interview that he will reprise his role as Jesus in “The Resurrection of Christ.” In his interview, he stated that filming could possibly begin this summer at the “Cinecittà” studio in Rome and be released in 2026, but the exact timing has not yet been confirmed.

Referring to “The Passion of the Christ,” he said about this film: “In the previous project, my life was almost in danger. I suffered from problems such as a dislocated shoulder, hypothermia, and even a lightning strike, and after filming ended, I faced serious health issues that required two heart surgeries, and I am still recovering from the psychological damage caused by the experience of the first film.”

Jim, who is now 56 years old, expressed his pleasure at being offered the role of Jesus in the film “The Resurrection of Christ” directed by Mel Gibson, and has given a positive response to taking on the role. He added that he is excited to reprise the role of Jesus in the aforementioned film. Without referring to the details of the film, Jim said: “This film contains events that are indescribable and will be shocking to the audience. I cannot tell you how Mel Gibson will portray them, but I will say this much: the film is so good that it will be the greatest film in history.”

He also added about his feelings for playing the role of Jesus: “Playing the role of Jesus in ‘The Resurrection of Christ’ has deep meaning for me, and I am eagerly awaiting the start of filming. I am very excited about this role and am preparing for a sacred battle, and for this purpose, I have begun prayer and fasting, and I intend to participate in the Last Supper ceremony every day during filming.”
