Restoration of Saint Peter’s Basilica Undertaken by Female Specialists for the First Time

For the first time, the Vatican has entrusted the restoration of the important Saint Peter’s Basilica to specialized female professionals.

Saint Peter’s Basilica is considered the most renowned masterpiece of the Renaissance period, designed by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and is regarded as the greatest architectural and tourist attraction in Vatican City.

The aforementioned basilica holds exceptionally special religious and architectural significance. This church is the burial place of Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Christ and the first Pope of the world. Additionally, thousands of people from around the world visit this basilica annually to celebrate Easter, which is one of the most important religious ceremonies for Catholics.

During the years 1506 to 1526, daughters and wives of men who had lost their lives in the construction of this church project intermittently collaborated in the project in place of their husbands and fathers to earn income.

Saint Peter’s Basilica possesses a unique feature that connects the church with the heavens above. A small bronze disk placed on the ground, known as the “Winter Solstice Marker,” is positioned on December 21 with the obelisk in St. Peter’s Square and at the entrance. On this day, when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky, light enters through the church’s front window and illuminates the disk.

This feature is not only a beautiful display of the interaction between architecture and astronomy, but also a reminder of the significance of the solstice in Christian spirituality. This symbol represents the return of longer days and is often associated with the coming of Christ and the return of light to the world.

According to reports published by Vatican media, two Italian female experts have now been added to the restoration team of Saint Peter’s Basilica. In the history of the construction of the aforementioned basilica, this is the first time that women have been appointed to work on the restoration of this cathedral and building operations.
