Amnesty International Calls for Investigation into War Crimes Allegations in Afghanistan

Amnesty International issued a statement calling on the International Criminal Court to investigate allegations of war crimes in Afghanistan.

According to Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, Afghanistan witnessed repeated bloodshed and war crimes in the months leading up to the fall of the previous government.

In Amnesty International’s statement, the Taliban, American military personnel, and the security forces of the former Afghan government have been identified as responsible for harming civilians.

Amnesty International has asked the International Criminal Court to include an examination of the performance of American forces and soldiers of the previous government in its investigations into war crimes in Afghanistan.

The United Nations Office in Afghanistan announced that in the first six months of this year, approximately 1,700 civilians were killed and more than 3,500 others were wounded in the country. A figure that represents a 47 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
