Mine Explosion in Mehran County Leaves 2 Dead

Today, Thursday, the 30th of Bahman, 2 military personnel died as a result of a mine explosion in the border areas of Mehran county in Ilam Province, from mines left over from the Iran-Iraq War.

According to Hrana news agency, citing Mehr news agency, today Thursday, the 30th of Bahman 1399, two military officers died when a mine exploded while they were searching for missing persons from the Iran-Iraq War in Mehran county.

The incident occurred in the Kaleh Qandi operational area of Mehran county.

The report did not identify the two deceased military personnel.

Mines left behind from the war period cause the death and injury of a number of citizens in border areas every year.

Approximately 42,000 square kilometers of Iranian territory is contaminated with mines left over and unexploded from the Iran-Iraq War.

The Iranian government continues to produce and plant anti-personnel mines and, contrary to international treaties, believes that the use of these mines is the only effective way to ensure the security of this country’s long borders.

On this basis, sections of Iran’s borders with Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq have been mined; during the conflicts of the 1980s in Kurdistan, many areas of this region were also mined.
