Navid Afkari Reports New Beatings in Prison Call

A political activist in Iran says Navid Afkari, an Iranian wrestler, has contacted his family and reported that he is being tortured in prison.
Mahdi Mahmouyian, a political activist, wrote on his Twitter account that Navid Afkari informed them in a brief call that he and his two brothers are being held in one location.
According to Mahdi Mahmouyian’s post, Navid Afkari also explained that he has been beaten in prison and needs to see a forensic doctor, but prison authorities have refused to provide him with a complaint form.
Navid Afkari, a youth wrestling champion in Iran who was arrested following the August 2018 protests, has been sentenced to two death sentences, six and a half years imprisonment, and 74 lashes on charges of killing a security officer. His brothers Vahid and Habib have each been sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison with lashing.
Amid increasing domestic and international calls for the cancellation of Navid Afkari’s death sentence, Hassan Younesi, his lawyer, announced on Saturday that the three brothers have been transferred from the general ward of Adel Abad Prison in Shiraz to an “unknown location.”
