Corona and Heat Increase Per Capita Water Consumption in Tehran by 20 Percent

Mohammad Reza Bakhtiari, CEO of Tehran Water and Wastewater Company, has announced a twenty percent increase in per capita water consumption in Tehran, stating that Tehran’s water situation has reached an orange alert status, which he describes as “critical”.

Mr. Bakhtiari, noting that consumption increased by 25 percent with the onset of the coronavirus outbreak, says that the beginning of the summer season has now placed double pressure on the city’s water network.

According to this capital’s water and wastewater official, even if sufficient water exists behind the dams surrounding Tehran, the capacity of transfer facilities is limited, and according to him, water is currently entering Tehran at full capacity.

Among the methods to reduce water consumption, particularly during the hot season, are avoiding the use of drinking water for unnecessary purposes including washing vehicles, irrigating green spaces, and filling swimming pools.
