U.S. State Department Official Condemns Harassment of Persian-Speaking Journalists by Islamic Republic

A U.S. State Department official announced that the United States government condemns the harassment and threats against Persian-speaking journalists outside Iran by the Islamic Republic regime.

Robert Destro, Deputy Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, said on Tuesday, February 4, in a Twitter message: “We stand with the people of Iran on their right to freedom of information, and we stand with independent journalists who are fighting to inform the public.”

Previously, Brian Hook, the U.S. State Department’s Special Representative on Iran, had announced that the United States condemns the targeting of journalists and their families by the Iranian regime.

In recent months, the government and judicial system of the Islamic Republic have again imposed restrictions on journalists working at some Persian-language media outlets outside Iran, including blacklisting, and have put pressure on the families of some Iranian journalists.
