German Intelligence Agency: Iran Still Seeking to Develop Its Nuclear Weapons Program

The latest report from Germany’s intelligence agency in the state of Bavaria shows that the Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking to expand its conventional weapons arsenal and acquire weapons of mass destruction systems.

Israel’s Jerusalem Post newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing a 312-page document released by Bavaria’s German intelligence agency: “Iran, North Korea, Syria and Pakistan are attempting to expand their conventional weapons arsenals by acquiring and developing weapons of mass destruction.”

The document from Bavaria’s German intelligence agency was released in April 2018 and referenced the illegal efforts of these countries in acquiring and expanding nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

The report stated that Iran is seeking to obtain necessary components for manufacturing weapons of mass destruction from Germany and other developed countries, as well as to acquire technical knowledge in this field.

In 2017, Iran had attempted to purchase materials and technology needed for manufacturing weapons of mass destruction from German companies.

The Jerusalem Post reported in early June this year citing a report from Germany’s intelligence agency in the state of Baden-Württemberg: “Iran, like Pakistan and Syria, continues to seek tools and technical knowledge to produce weapons of mass destruction. At the same time, it is attempting to develop a missile delivery system for such weapons.”

Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, has not commented on her country’s intelligence reports.

Ms. Merkel supports the JCPOA and considers it a means to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
