Official coronavirus death toll reaches 16,000; Rouhani government spokesman tests positive for coronavirus

Hassan Rouhani's government spokesman was hospitalized after testing positive for the coronavirus. At the same time, according to official statistics, the number of victims of the virus in Iran has reached 16,000.

According to the Iranian Broadcasting Corporation, Ali Rabiei has been resting at home since last week and "has been hospitalized at the urging of doctors."

The report does not specify when the Rouhani government spokesman contracted the coronavirus.

Previously, some members of the government, including Masoumeh Ebtekar, the Vice President for Women's Affairs, and Ali Asghar Munesan, the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, had contracted the coronavirus.

In recent days, despite the increase in coronavirus statistics, Hassan Rouhani's stance on holding Muharram mourning ceremonies even in areas that are red in terms of the spread of coronavirus has faced numerous criticisms and questions.

Emphasizing that we do not have a duality between mourning and health, the Iranian President has called for holding Muharram ceremonies "in compliance with health protocols."

Ahmad Tavakoli, a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, called for the promotion of home mourning sessions in a tweet, noting that the current situation may endanger the "lives of thousands of mourners."

Masih Mohajeri, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Jomhuri Eslami, also criticized Rouhani's statements in an editorial on August 25, saying that it is "not possible to observe health protocols during mourning ceremonies."

He has called on the president, "as the commander-in-chief of the Corona Countermeasures Headquarters... to put aside flattery" and order the creation of "necessary restrictions, especially on gatherings."

The official number of coronavirus victims reached about 16,000.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Health said that 212 people have died from the coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

Thus, according to official statistics, the number of coronavirus patients in the country has reached 15,912.

Sima Sadat Lari, who announced the statistics on the coronavirus in Iran on Monday, said that 2,434 new patients were identified during this period, bringing the total number of identified patients to 293,606.

He also said that 25 provinces are in red or alert status regarding the spread of the coronavirus.

The statistics of Ministry of Health officials regarding the coronavirus in Iran have always been met with serious doubts.

Previously, the Parliamentary Research Center had estimated in a report that the number of victims was at least twice the official figures.

In the latest example, Nahid Khodakarami, a member of the Tehran City Council, reported that 234 people were sacrificed in the past two days in Tehran and that they were buried in Behesht Zahra.

These statistics were presented yesterday, while Iraj Harirchi, Deputy General of the Iranian Ministry of Health, announced that 600 new patients with coronavirus are being hospitalized in Tehran every day, and said: "Between 5 and 10 percent of those hospitalized lose their lives."

According to the statements of the Deputy Minister of Health in Tehran, 30 to 60 people have been sacrificed in Tehran every day, but today's words from a member of the Tehran City Council indicate that over the past two days, more than 110 people have been sacrificed in Tehran every day.
