IAEA: Iran must provide transparency about Natanz underground tunnels

The International Atomic Energy Agency has called on the Islamic Republic to provide transparency about underground tunnels near the Natanz nuclear facility.

Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, while noting that he has raised the issue of underground tunnels with Tehran many times and followed it up, once again announced in Washington that the Islamic Republic must explain the purpose of the underground tunnels located near the Natanz nuclear facility. He stated: "I do not intend to speculate, but undeclared materials may be stored in these tunnels."

Grossi also pointed to satellite images released by the Institute for Science and International Security that show a new tunnel and a security fence deep underground near the old Natanz tunnel. He stressed that all countries are required to provide information about their nuclear site-related facilities to the International Atomic Energy Agency, but Iran has exempted itself from this requirement, saying in response to the agency’s questions: “This is none of your business.”

Rafael Grossi also said about his trip to Tehran last week: "We agreed with Iranian authorities that a technical team would be sent to Iran to continue talks, including on the reinstallation of surveillance cameras at nuclear facilities."
