Mass arrests continue in Iran; A civil activist living in Isfahan was "detained"

Unofficial reports on social media indicate the arrest of Nasser Hemmati, a civil activist and psychiatrist living in Isfahan.

Many activists reported on Twitter on Monday, January 29, that Nasser Hemmati had been arrested a few days ago. The reason for his arrest and where he is being held are still unknown.

Mr. Hemmati wrote about the 5th of January ceremony in his last Twitter post, published on January 4th.

While several days have passed since the memorial ceremony for the victims of the November protests was held, reports continue to indicate that arrests are continuing in Iran.

On January 25, an informed source told VOA that at least ten people had been arrested in the cemetery in Karaj. VOA cannot yet independently confirm the number of people arrested in Karaj and other cities.

This is despite the fact that the Islamic Republic authorities have not provided official figures on the number of deaths and arrests in these protests. According to a Reuters report, the November protests resulted in about 1,500 deaths.

Human rights activists called on the permanent members of the Security Council to pass a resolution condemning the repression of the people in Iran as a "crime against humanity."

U.S. government officials have repeatedly condemned the Islamic Republic regime’s crackdown on protesters. For example, Brian Hook, the U.S. State Department’s special representative for Iran, said on Saturday evening, January 27, regarding the situation in Iran: “The death toll in Iran is rising. Reuters reported the latest death toll at the hands of the regime at around 1,500. More than 8,000 people have been arrested and thousands have been injured in the crackdown. Protesters across the country are fed up with this corrupt religious mafia, a lack of opportunity, a dysfunctional economy, and diplomatic isolation.”

Brian Hook added: "Iran is in the midst of its worst economic and political crisis in 40 years. If you look at the repression they've been carrying out, they've never resorted to this level of violence. And I think that's indicative of a regime that's losing support."
