Jordan Recalls Its Ambassador from Iran for “Consultations”

Jordan recalled its ambassador from Tehran for “consultations” on Monday, accusing Iran of interfering in the affairs of other countries.

According to a statement by a Jordanian government spokesperson, the move was made in protest of what was described as “Iran’s interference in the internal affairs of neighboring countries, particularly Arab states in the Persian Gulf region.”

However, the spokesperson did not clarify what specific factor prompted Jordan’s decision, but said part of Amman’s decision, which maintains close relations with Riyadh, is connected to last year’s attack on Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic facilities in Iran.

A group of government-supporting individuals in Iran attacked Saudi Arabia’s embassy and consulate in Tehran and Mashhad following the execution of a Shiite cleric in Saudi Arabia, after which Saudi Arabia and a number of its allies severed their relations with Iran. However, Jordan, following that attack, only summoned Iran’s ambassador.

In remarks by Jordan’s government spokesperson published in the Jordanian state news agency, it was stated that “Iran does not respect the sovereignty of Arab countries.”

Iranian government officials have repeatedly rejected any interference in the internal affairs of countries in the region.
