Haft Tapeh sugarcane workers' two-week strike ends after negotiations with employer

The two-week strike of the workers at the Haft Tapeh Sugar Company ended after the employer agreed to some of the demands of the workers.

The Iranian Labor News Agency, ILNA, reported on Sunday, September 1, that following labor union negotiations held on Friday and Saturday at the Khuzestan Governorate and the Shush County Labor Department, the Haft Tappeh sugarcane workers' union protest ended after nearly 14 days and the workers returned to work.

On Saturday, some news sites reported, citing the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company workers' union, that following a meeting between members of the Haft Tappeh Workers' Representatives Assembly, the deputy governor of Khuzestan, and the employer in Ahvaz, the employer agreed to some of the workers' demands.

Accordingly, it was decided that from now on, the drafting of contracts with workers will be carried out in the presence of representatives of the Department of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare and under the supervision of labor representatives, in accordance with regulations.

It was also decided that the implementation of the job classification plan would be put on the agenda after the legal grounds were provided, and the employer announced that it would not oppose the implementation of this plan or any other legal matter. In addition, it was decided that the workers' arrears of wages would be paid by Wednesday, September 14.

Workers at Haft Tapeh Sugar Company have been facing backlogs of salaries and other union problems for years, and in recent years they have repeatedly held protests and strikes to protest the postponement of their demands.

Haft Tapeh Sugarcane Company has faced problems since its privatization in 2015, and has mostly delayed the payment of salaries to its workers. According to ILNA news agency, in the recent protests, the workers announced that they are demanding at least three months of salaries.
