Ukraine criticizes Pope Francis' "speech"

Ukrainian officials have strongly criticized Pope Francis's comments that Kyiv must have the courage to negotiate an end to the war with Russia.
Ukrainian officials and allies have criticized Pope Francis' comments that Kiev is negotiating with Russia to end the war, saying they are asking Ukraine to surrender to Russia.
Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, emphasized at Sunday's ceremony that surrender has no place in the minds of Ukrainians, adding: "Although wounded and tired, Ukraine stands against Russia and will continue to resist."
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said, following strong criticism of Pope Francis's remarks, "Pope Francis's intention is to support a cessation of hostilities and a ceasefire achieved through courageous negotiations, not an end to the war achieved by the mere surrender of Ukraine. Pope Francis' use of the white flag was in response to a reporter's question, although the term "white flag" is not used by the Pope."
Criticism of the Vatican intensified as Pope Francis tried to maintain the Vatican's traditional diplomatic neutrality throughout the war.
