BBC: UN Should Demand Iran Stop Harassing Persian Service Staff

The Telegraph, citing the French news agency, has published a report on the BBC’s request to the United Nations, in which the BBC has asked the organization to take action so that the Islamic Republic of Iran stops harassing and persecuting BBC Persian service employees.

In this unprecedented request, it was stated that the harassment of BBC employees by the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been generally ignored.

Lawyers for the BBC World Service had submitted an urgent request last October to the UN’s special rapporteurs on human rights, asking them to take action on the matter. Now, BBC journalists are trying to increase pressure on member states to follow up on the situation at this week’s meeting of the Human Rights Council.

The Telegraph writes that over the past nine years, “collective punishment” of BBC Persian service employees and their families in Iran has worsened.

It is worth noting that the Islamic Republic, in addition to harassing and persecuting BBC Persian service employees, has a history of harassing and persecuting other Persian-language networks outside the country.
