Diplomatic efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran before the start of the Vienna talks

Three weeks before the start of the JCPOA negotiations, Iranian officials have taken diplomatic steps to gain favorable views from European countries. Amir Abdollahian has held talks with his German counterpart, and Bagheri has announced meetings with European politicians.

The seventh round of negotiations of the Joint Commission on the JCPOA will be held in Vienna on November 29. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran intends to raise and resolve some issues in dialogue with European officials as well as politicians from Russia and China before the start of these negotiations.

The German Foreign Ministry announced on its Twitter account that Hossein Amir-Abdollahian had a phone call with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

The tweet reads: “Heiko Maas spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian today [Monday, November 8]. The main focus of the conversation was the resumption of talks in Vienna at the end of this month. Germany’s goal remains to conclude these talks as quickly as possible and to ensure compliance with the commitments foreseen in the nuclear deal as soon as possible.”

On the other hand, the official news agency of the Islamic Republic of Iran, IRNA, also reported on Monday, November 8, that Hossein Amir-Abdollahian had a phone call with his British counterpart, Liz Rice. IRNA also announced that the main topic of the conversation between the two politicians was the negotiations to revive the JCPOA and lift sanctions.

Ali Bagheri Kani, the deputy foreign minister in the Ebrahim Raisi administration and the country's chief negotiator in Vienna, also announced in a Twitter post that he would meet with "several European counterparts" in the coming days regarding the lifting of the sanctions anticipated by the United States.

The announcement of the start date for the seventh round of JCPOA negotiations in Vienna came after Bagheri's talks with Enrique Moura, deputy head of the European Union's foreign policy coordinator, Josep Borrell, and the EU's representative in the JCPOA negotiations.

On Monday, November 8, Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for the Islamic Republic's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, once again demanded guarantees from the United States that the country would not repeat its withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

It should be noted that the Biden administration has repeatedly stated explicitly that it cannot legally decide for the future US government and that it is not possible for that country to provide such a guarantee.
