Citizens' Rights | Third Session of Jamshid Sharmehed's Court; Verdict Issued for Hirad Pir Badaghi

While negotiations to revive the JCPOA continue in Vienna and human rights activists have called on Western countries not to lift sanctions related to human rights violations in a possible agreement with Tehran, news from Iran indicates continued arrests and prison sentences for civil activists and protesters.

On Sunday, the third trial session of Jamshid Sharmehed, the leader of the "Thunder" group, an opposition group to the Islamic Republic, was held in Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

In this court session, presided over by Judge Salavati, new charges were brought against him, including the intention to bomb Friday prayers and the Tehran Book Fair, planning to assassinate the then-governor of Gilan, and the intention to carry out an operation using chemical agents in the Islamic Consultative Assembly.

In the previous two court sessions, charges such as the explosion at the shoe store at Ayatollah Khomeini's mausoleum in 2009 and the bombing at the Husseiniyeh in Shiraz were brought against Jamshid Sharmehd; charges that could lead to the death penalty.

Jamshid Sharmehed's family has denied these accusations and called his trial a sham.

The Iranian Human Rights Organization also described his trial and trial process as unfair.

Jamshid Sharmehed, who has dual German citizenship, was apparently kidnapped by Islamic Republic security agents and transferred to Iran during his trip to Dubai in August 2020.

Meanwhile, Judge Iman Afshari of Branch 26 of Tehran's Revolutionary Court sentenced civil activist Hirad Pir Badaghi to four years and eight months in prison.

In addition to prison, he has been sentenced to two years of ban on membership in political and social groups and a two-year ban on leaving the country. This is despite the fact that all of this civil activist's activities have been in defense of workers' rights.

The Iranian Human Rights Organization also reported on Saturday that Zaratosht Ahmadi Ragheb was beaten by a number of prisoners convicted of dangerous crimes.

This civil activist, regardless of the principle of separation of crimes, is being held in Ward 4 of Greater Tehran Prison, a ward that is reserved for prisoners of general crimes, not political prisoners.

Zaratosht Ahmadi Ragheb, who is one of the signatories of the statement calling for Ali Khamenei's resignation, has been imprisoned many times in recent years and has been on a hunger strike since the first day of his recent arrest, on March 18.

In other news, teacher and union activist Ruhollah Mardani was also summoned to the Noorabad court.

His accusation is that he is engaged in propaganda activities against the regime, while all of his activities are union-related and in the field of defending teachers' rights.

Ruhollah Mardani was also arrested on February 20 for participating in teachers' protests and was released on bail after 10 days.
