Ebrahim Raisi's implicit support for Russia's attack on Ukraine in phone call with Putin

In a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran implicitly supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine, saying, "We hope that what is happening will end up in the interest of the nations and the region."

In a phone call on Thursday, March 25, Ebrahim Raisi told Putin that "NATO's expansion eastward is causing tension" and claimed that "NATO's expansion is a serious threat to the stability and security of independent countries in various regions."

According to the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Vladimir Putin claimed in the call that the attack on Ukraine was "a legitimate response to decades of violations of security treaties and Western attempts to undermine Russia's security."

In recent days, Iran has blamed the United States and NATO for the current situation in Ukraine. The Iranian authorities' stance in support of Russia's claims has been met with widespread negative reactions on social media.
