Knife attack in Turku, Finland leaves 2 dead, 6 injured

A man armed with a knife has injured eight people in the centre of the city of Turku in southwestern Finland. Two of the injured have died, hospital officials in Turku said. Police shot and wounded the attacker and then arrested him.
A man armed with a knife injured several people in the center of Turku on Friday (August 18), Finnish police said. Two people died from their injuries, Finnish media reported. Finnish security sources said the attacker had been arrested.
Finnish police said officers were forced to shoot the attacker in the leg to arrest him. Police urged people to leave the city center of Turku. According to media reports, several shots were heard. Turku is located in southwestern Finland and has a population of 190,000.
According to eyewitnesses, the attacker attacked passersby with a large knife. At least five women were among the injured in the attack. Officials at the hospital where the injured were taken said that two people were killed and six others were injured in the attack.
The identity of the attacker has not yet been released by police. According to Finnish police, the attacker had no accomplices and carried out the deadly attack alone.
Security measures have also been tightened in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, especially at the city's airport.
Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila announced in a tweet that an emergency government meeting would be held soon.
