The prison sentence of imprisoned civil activist Rezvaneh Ahmad Khanbeigi was upheld by the Court of Appeal.

The six-year prison sentence of Rezvaneh Ahmad Khanbeigi, a civil rights activist imprisoned in Iran, previously issued by the Revolutionary Court, was upheld by the Court of Appeal.

An informed source told VOA on Monday, May 12, that the 6-year prison sentence of Rezvaneh Khanbeigi, which was issued in February of last year by Branch 24 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of "gathering and colluding with the intention of committing a crime against national security" and "propaganda activity against the Islamic Republic of Iran," was upheld in full by Branch 36 of the Tehran Provincial Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Zargar, after the civil activist's objection and appeal were rejected.

This sentence was issued to this civil activist despite the fact that, according to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, which stipulates the aggregation of sentences, only 5 years of this sentence will be applicable for the charge of gathering and collusion with the intention of committing a crime against national security.

Previously, the Voice of America reported that a hearing on the case of Rezvaneh Ahmad Khanbeigi was held on Friday, February 1, 2019, and that the civil activist's prison sentence was issued on Saturday, February 3, of the same year by Judge Mohammad Reza Amozadeh, head of Branch 24 of the Revolutionary Court, "based on a report from the IRGC Intelligence Organization."

The prison sentence of this civil activist has been confirmed by the Court of Appeals, even though he was previously sentenced to four years and five months in prison in another case by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of "gathering and colluding against national security" and "propaganda against the Islamic system." This sentence was also confirmed by Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeals.

Rezvaneh Ahmad Khanbeigi, a civil activist imprisoned in Evin Prison who suffers from multiple illnesses, including epilepsy and seizures, is among the prisoners who were unable to receive leave due to the outbreak of the coronavirus in Iran and remains in prison to this day.

The United States has repeatedly and on various occasions condemned the violent confrontations and widespread repression of protesters and civil activists, as well as the repeated and persistent violations of the rights of Iranian citizens by the ruling regime in that country.
