Ebrahim Raisi's order to cancel the implementation of the 2030 Agenda; Khamenei considered its implementation to be "questioning the country's independence"

The Secretary of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution of the Islamic Republic of Iran announced that President Ebrahim Raisi announced seven resolutions of the council, including "cancellation of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda."

According to IRNA, in addition to canceling the implementation of the 2030 document, other notified approvals include the Iranology Foundation, the law on the formation of the Board of Trustees of Universities and Higher Education and Research Institutions, the establishment of the Planning Group for Special Educational and Research Centers and Institutions, and the amendment and completion of the regulations of the Cultural and Physical Education Commission and the Ministry of Interior.

The cancellation of the 2030 Education Document was approved by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution on June 13, 2017, but has not yet been implemented.

Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, had strongly criticized the Rouhani government for what he called the quiet implementation of the 2030 Agenda in educational institutions.

Later, Hassan Rouhani announced that Iran was not committed to implementing this document and said that the Leader was given false reports about this document, but Ayatollah Khamenei announced that the reports he had received were completely correct.

Khamenei considered the implementation of the 2030 Agenda to be a questioning of the country's independence.

At the same time, government officials announced that, due to the opposition of the Leader of the Islamic Republic, the implementation of the provisions of the 2030 Agenda had been suspended in the government.

The conflict over the implementation of this document continued until in June 2017, during a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, the spokesman for the then government, told reporters that if the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution did not approve the 2030 Document, the government would not implement it.

The 2030 Agenda was developed based on the United Nations General Assembly resolution, “The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Transforming the World,” which was adopted by the members in September 2015. The resolution lists 17 sustainable development agendas for UN member states. Members are not obligated to implement the resolution and can choose to adapt it to their own circumstances.

Education is one of the components of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda. The UN agenda states that by 2030, member states of the organization should provide equal, high-quality and inclusive education to all residents of the country, regardless of gender or ethnicity.

The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran also unveiled its educational program in December 2016, based on the United Nations program, which is what the 2030 document in Iran means.
