Congressional Democrats join 'No to War with Iran' march in Washington

Senators Jeff Markley and Barbara Lee, Jim McGovern, Andy Levin, Jan Shekowski, Pramila Jai Opal, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Mark Pocon, and other congressional Democrats participated in a rally in front of the US Capitol on Thursday evening in Washington, hosted by several American non-governmental organizations.
Jim McGovern, the Democratic chairman of the House Rules Committee, said at the rally: "We want to emphasize our authority on the issue of war and peace and that the United States does not intend to go to war with Iran."
Congresswoman Barbara Lee also said, "The American people do not want unnecessary and catastrophic wars in the Middle East."
Many congressional speakers emphasized that President Trump is required by the U.S. Constitution to obtain congressional authorization before any use of military force against Iran.
According to Democratic Congressman Mark Pocan, President Trump “made the most drastic decision, one that had been rejected by previous Democratic and Republican presidents: killing Qassem Soleimani without the advice and legal consent of Congress.”
"We want diplomacy, we want de-escalation and peace," Pokan said.
On Thursday, "No to War with Iran" demonstrations were also held in other US cities.
