Going to the point of death to stay safe from Corona; Global reflection on the deaths of 700 Iranians due to methanol consumption

The deaths of 700 Iranians due to methanol consumption have received widespread coverage in world publications.

An Iranian official said Monday that 700 people have died from consuming the toxic substance methanol (wood alcohol) in the mistaken belief that it kills the coronavirus, the Associated Press reported. The report was also reported by the Time website.

This figure is higher than the figures published by the Ministry of Health, and Hossein Hassanian, a scientific advisor to the Iranian Ministry of Health, has said that the difference in the figures is because a number of victims died outside the hospital.

Earlier, Gholamhossein Esmaili, spokesman for the Iranian Judiciary, on Tuesday, April 9, described the number of deaths and poisonings caused by alcohol consumption as higher than "expected," saying that there were more than 600 deaths and more than 3,000 poisonings in the country.

Official statistics from countries like Iran, China, and Russia cannot be verified by independent experts and cannot be considered reliable or final. For example, the actual number of coronavirus cases is much higher than the announced figures, and authorities do not provide information about the actual number of infected and dead.
