Earthquake in Northeast Iran Leaves 2 Dead and 400 Injured

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale in northeast Iran has left 2 dead and 400 injured.

According to Iranian news agencies, the earthquake occurred Saturday night on the 23rd of Ordibehesht in North Khorasan Province, approximately 22 kilometers from the city of Bojnord.

Taghi Dowlatabad, head of the Crisis Management and Emergency Medical Services Center at North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences, stated that as a result of this incident, two people have died and 400 have been injured. Of these injured, 177 were hospitalized while the rest were discharged after treatment.

Photos from Iranian news agencies show that most of the earthquake damage was inflicted on villages in North Khorasan Province, resulting in the destruction of homes.

Following the earthquake, Iran’s government ordered an assessment of the situation of the affected. Ali Rabiei, the Labor and Social Affairs Minister, also traveled to the region on behalf of the government.

Razavi Khorasan Province and its center, Bojnord, are considered among Iran’s earthquake-prone areas. In 1996, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale shook the region and caused significant financial and human losses.

In Farvardin of this year, an earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale also shook the city of Fariman near Mashhad, leaving 2 dead and dozens injured.
