Greater Tehran Prison: Political prisoners protest following transfer with further deprivation

This evening, Wednesday, October 29, dozens of political prisoners held in Brigade 5 of Greater Tehran Prison were transferred to Brigade 2 of the prison, which had previously housed drug addicts. Dozens of these people protested after being transferred to this location. The transfer of these prisoners comes at a time when most of these people are from economically weak backgrounds and have purchased items such as refrigerators, televisions, etc. since their arrest and entry into prison, and now they are not allowed to move any of the purchased items.

According to HRANA News Agency, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, this evening, Wednesday, October 29, 2002, political prisoners imprisoned in Brigade 5 of Greater Tehran Prison were transferred to Brigade 2 of the prison, which had previously been used to hold drug addicts.

These political prisoners, who are generally from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, have stated that since their arrest and entry into prison, they have purchased items such as refrigerators, televisions, etc., and now, after being transferred to this ward, they have not been allowed to move their belongings. They have also said that they have been busy repairing the walls and ceiling of the previous ward and installing curtains on the beds for a long time, and now all their efforts and expenses have gone to waste.

A source familiar with the transfer of these prisoners and the conditions of their detention in Brigade 2 of Greater Tehran Prison told HRANA: “As of this afternoon, prison officials told political prisoners imprisoned in Brigade 5, Andarzgah 2, Hall 2 of Greater Tehran Prison to prepare themselves to be transferred to another ward. The prisoners resisted the demands of the prison officials and finally, when a special prison guard entered the ward, they transferred the prisoners from there to the Brigade 2 Hall of Greater Tehran Hall 4. This hall has 3 rooms, each room has 24 beds, and based on the number of people who have been transferred to this ward, at least 10 people will be sleeping on the floor on the first night. On the other hand, in the previous year, there were 16 bathrooms and 16 toilets, but in this ward there are 6 toilets and 4 bathrooms, most of which are broken and unused. In the previous ward, there were more than 10 telephones, and in this ward there are only two working telephones, and the rest are broken. "This ward also lacks basic sanitary facilities and is full of scabies, lice, bedbugs, etc., and since the prisoners arrived at the new location, they have been disinfecting the ward with few basic materials and equipment, fearing the presence of the coronavirus in the ward."

Some of these prisoners refused to receive government food rations in protest of their transfer to this location and have informed prison officials that they will continue their protest until they are returned to their former ward.
