UN: More than 100,000 people detained or disappeared in eight-year Syrian war

Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations, stated on Wednesday, August 6, that more than 100,000 people have been detained or disappeared in the Syrian conflict since eight years ago.

According to the Associated Press, Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo emphasized that the Syrian government's role in these actions is greater.

However, he has called on all parties involved in the Syrian war to release prisoners and provide their families with the necessary information about the status of the detained and missing.

Rosemary DiCarlo, who spoke at a Security Council meeting on the issue of detainees and missing persons in the Syrian conflict, said that the United Nations has not been able to confirm the number of more than 100,000 detainees and missing persons in Syria because it has not had access to all detention centers in Syria.

He added: "The current verified information was prepared by the Commission of Inquiry on Syria, which was mandated by the UN Human Rights Council and human rights organizations."

A number of detainees and their families spoke at this Security Council meeting.

Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's deputy representative to the United Nations, considered the statistics and information provided regarding detainees in Syria "unverifiable" and rejected them.

Dmitry Polyansky called "politicizing human rights issues" in Syria unacceptable.

The Russian deputy representative added: "We are once again witnessing accusations against one side of the conflict, Damascus, while the other side, the terrorists, are presented as innocent victims."

Jonathan Cohen, the head of the US mission to the United Nations, also said at the Security Council meeting that 215,000 people have been detained by the Syrian government since 2011.

He added: "Currently, nearly 128,000 people are in Syrian government prisons."

Mr. Cohen emphasized: "One of the great tragedies of the Syrian war is the issue of detainees and missing persons."
