Sahar, the "Blue Girl" of football fans, died of self-immolation

Sahar Khodayari, a soccer-loving girl who tried to enter Azadi Stadium disguised as a man, died a week after setting herself on fire in Motahari Hospital. The death of the “Blue Girl” has received widespread coverage on social media.

She is referred to as Sahar Kh. and Sara in the media and social networks. A 29-year-old football lover who lost her life while trying to watch a match of her favorite team, Esteghlal, and the consequences of this action. Sahar Khodayari died in hospital on Monday, September 8, after 90 percent self-immolation.

She was arrested by law enforcement officers in March last year on charges of attempting to illegally enter a football stadium, but was later released on bail. She was then told that she had been sentenced to six months in prison. The Khabar Online website had previously reported that the girl was under a “banned visitation order.” 

On September 1, Sahar went to the Revolutionary Court to get his cell phone back, but was told that the judge was on leave. After leaving the court, he set himself on fire while shouting and, according to eyewitnesses, protesting something; a protest that resulted in his death.

The Khabar Online website reported that the extent of the burns on this soccer-loving girl was 90 percent and her type was third-degree. Sahar was hospitalized in the ICU at Motahari Hospital and on a ventilator.

Hospital security guards are even preventing reporters from talking to her family. The news of Sahar's death has been widely reported on social media.

Before the news of Sahar's death was published, the Human Rights Watch website had published a report on her self-immolation, calling on international sports organizations to take action to lift the ban on women's presence in sports stadiums.

The report criticized FIFA's delayed response to the ban on women entering sports fields. The report cited Article 4 of FIFA's rules, which prohibits discrimination against women. Human Rights Watch has called for FIFA and international institutions to punish violators of women's rights.
