Shadkam sentenced to 35 years in prison and two years of forced residence in Nikshahr

Mohammad Moghimi, the lawyer for social activist Abbas Nouri Shadkam, announced that his client has been sentenced to 35 years in prison and two years of forced residence in Nikshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan Province. Shadkam was arrested by IRGC intelligence agents in 2016.

On Sunday, September 8, Mohammad Moghimi, Abbas Nouri Shadkam's defense lawyer, tweeted that his client had been sentenced to 35 years in prison and two years of compulsory residence in Nikshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

Moghimi wrote in his tweet: "My client, Mr. Abbas Nouri Shadkam, a social activist, was sentenced to 35 years in prison (each charge carries a 7-year prison sentence, one of which is enforceable under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code) and two years of compulsory residence in Nikshahr in Branch 1 of the Criminal Court of Yazd Province on charges of insulting the Prophet, insulting Prophet David, Prophet Zahra, Prophet Moses, and Prophet Khadija."

Mohammad Moghimi, Abbas Nouri Shadkam's defense lawyer, also said that the verdict issued for his client has been confirmed by the Supreme Court and will soon be notified to his client for execution.

The lawyer added: "In addition to these charges, other charges, including insulting the Prophet and propaganda against the regime, were also raised in the Bafq Revolutionary Court against Mr. Nouri, but fortunately he was acquitted of these charges."

According to the HRANA news agency, the news organ of the Human Rights Activists Association in Iran, the court hearing on Shadkam’s charges was held last year in the Yazd Province Criminal Court. The HRANA report also states that he was arrested for “Telegram activities” and on charges of “propaganda against the regime.” 

Abbas Nouri Shadkam was arrested by IRGC intelligence agents in August 2016 for his Telegram activities and on charges of propaganda against the regime. After nearly 11 months, he was released on June 10, 2017, after posting a bail of one and a half billion Tomans.

The final court session investigating Mr. Shadkam's charges, which resulted in a 35-year prison sentence and two years of mandatory residence in Nikshahr, was held in June of last year in Branch 1 of the Criminal Court of Yazd Province.

According to Iranian human rights activists, the large number of charges against civil, labor, and social activists has opened the door for judges to issue maximum sentences.

Abbas Nouri Shadkam is facing five charges. Abbas Nouri Shadkam has been sentenced to 35 years in prison and two years of compulsory residence in Nikshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, for five charges.
