Senior UN official visits Lake Urmia restoration project

The state-run IRNA news agency reported that the administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), along with the chargé d'affaires of the Japanese embassy and a representative of that country's International Cooperation Organization, visited the Lake Urmia Restoration Headquarters' projects.
The IRNA news agency says that foreign officials "visited the model site of this joint international project (to restore Lake Urmia) in the village of Talkhab, Miandoab."
According to the report, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, on behalf of the Tokyo government, is "contributing to the restoration of Lake Urmia through financial contributions, understanding the hydrological system cycle, and cooperation in evaluating measures."
Japan is among the countries that have provided financial assistance to the United Nations Development Program for the restoration of Lake Urmia.
Two years ago, the then head of the Iranian Environmental Organization and director of the Lake Urmia Restoration Headquarters said that the only way to secure financial resources for the restoration of Lake Urmia was "foreign borrowing."
The implementation of Lake Urmia's restoration operations has begun since the summer of 2014.
