Warning about the "serious" removal of Qeshm Geopark from UNESCO's list

Alireza Amrikazemi, the head of cultural heritage on Qeshm Island, referring to the continued destruction of the "Salt Cave" on the island, said that this illegal process "has seriously endangered the removal of the Qeshm Geopark from the UNESCO World Heritage List."

According to ISNA, the destruction of the cave is taking place in order to create a shrimp farming center.

Qeshm Geopark, which had been registered as a World Heritage Site since 2006, was removed from the UNESCO Geoparks list in 2012.

According to this government official, the necessary correspondence has been conducted with judicial authorities and the investor has been warned, but he has not listened and the shrimp farming project is proceeding.

He said that UNESCO assessors are scheduled to travel to Iran in the spring of 2020 to examine the status of this geopark.
