Canada notifies the Ontario Supreme Court ruling on the Ukrainian plane to the Iranian Foreign Ministry

Canada announced that it has notified the Ontario Supreme Court's ruling regarding the downing of Flight 752 over Tehran to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a letter dated June 7 to the law firm Gardiner Miller, which represents a number of families of the victims of Ukraine Flight 752 in Canada, the ministry says that the court ruling has been submitted to the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Ontario Supreme Court in Canada ruled in May last year that the downing of the Ukrainian plane by the Revolutionary Guard was a "deliberate" and "terrorist" act.

Canada's CBC reported at the time that four survivors of Flight 752, along with a woman who asked not to be named, had publicly filed a lawsuit against Iran in an Ontario court. The Iranian government did not send any representatives to the court and did not defend itself against the charges.

The Ontario court has awarded damages to the plaintiffs in the case of $107 million. Iran, however, has called the court's ruling "baseless" and says the Ontario Supreme Court "lacks jurisdiction" to hear the case of the downing of the plane because the incident "occurred outside the territory and jurisdiction of Canada."

Ukrainian airliner PS 752 was shot down on January 8, 2019, by at least two missiles fired by the Revolutionary Guards, killing all 176 people on board, most of whom were Iranians and dual Iranian-Canadian citizens.

The Islamic Republic denied shooting down the flight for several days, but after the release of evidence and documents by the United States, Australia, Canada, and Britain, it finally admitted under international pressure that the plane was shot down by missiles from the IRGC's defense system, but claims that the incident occurred due to "human error."
