At Least 16 People Killed in Canada’s Deadliest Armed Attack in 30 Years

At least 16 people have been killed in shootings by an armed man who was wearing a police uniform in the province of Nova Scotia. This attack is the deadliest armed assault in Canada since 1989.

Police say they have ended the attacks by the assailant, but have not confirmed reports that the attacker was killed by Canadian police gunfire.

It was previously reported that he was arrested at a gas station outside Halifax.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say the man, identified as Gabriel Wortman, a 51-year-old dentist, was wearing a police uniform and had even painted his vehicle to look like a police car.

Wortman opened fire on citizens at several locations throughout the province.

According to reports, the bodies of several of the victims were found inside and outside a home in the small town of Portapique, 100 kilometers from Halifax.

A police officer named Heidi Stevenson, who had 23 years of service, is also among the victims.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they have found no connection between the attacker and at least some of the victims, and still do not know the reason or motive for this deadly and unprecedented attack over the past 30 years.

In the province of Nova Scotia, like other parts of Canada, travel restrictions and movement limitations are in effect due to the spread of coronavirus.

Nova Scotia is located on the southeastern coast of Canada and Halifax is its capital. The entire province covers an area of approximately 55,000 square kilometers and has a population of less than one million.
