A report on the problems of prisoners in Greater Tehran Prison; a number of prisoners infected with the coronavirus

Prisoners held in quarantine unit 2 of Greater Tehran Prison face many problems in various areas. The following report addresses some of these problems, including the state of hygiene, food and drinking water, failure to observe the principle of segregation of crimes, and high prisoner density. It is said that at least 10 prisoners held in the Type 2 quarantine of this prison have been infected with the coronavirus.
According to HRANA, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, prisoners held in quarantine unit 2 of Greater Tehran Prison are facing many problems in various fields.
The authorities' disregard for prison conditions and violations of prisoners' rights have made it more difficult to endure imprisonment, especially during the coronavirus crisis. The following report addresses some of these problems, including the state of health, food and drinking water, failure to observe the principle of segregation of crimes, and high prison population density.
The density of prisoners in the Type 2 quarantine of this prison is high, and it is said that at least 50 people are currently sleeping on the floor. Also, the principle of segregation of crimes is not observed, and prisoners with different crimes, including prisoners accused of violent crimes, are kept alongside other prisoners.
A source close to the family of one of the prisoners told HRANA about the food and water situation: "The quality of the food is very low and the prison water is not drinkable. The prisoners are even forced to buy drinking water and prepare their own food in the kitchen of Hall 6, which has a gas stove."
According to this source, the prisoners are currently being kept in quarantine for 14 days due to the Corona situation. It is said that a few prisoners have been vaccinated. This is while, according to him, in recent days, at least 10 prisoners held in quarantine type 2 of Greater Tehran Prison have been infected with Corona and the prison health department is not carrying out the necessary procedures.
In mid-August of this year, Mohammad Mehdi Haj Mohammadi, head of the Prisons Organization, claimed on his Twitter account that 50% of the country's prisoners had been vaccinated.
HRANA recently examined the conditions of vaccination in a number of prisons in a report titled “Fears and Hopes; A Report on Corona Vaccination in Prisons.” The delay and lack of a regular program in vaccinating prisoners in various prisons in the country comes at a time when the outbreak of Corona has been reported many times in many prisons in the country and has involved many prisoners and their families in the problems of this disease. Neglecting the condition of sick prisoners in prisons, the lack of proper medical care in prisons, and the strictness of the authorities in sending prisoners to medical leave and hospitals, the lack of sufficient hygiene supplies, and the failure to create conditions for disease control and compliance with health protocols in prisons have always exacerbated the spread of the disease. The very high density of prisoners compared to the available space in prisons is also one of the main problems of prisoners during the Corona outbreak.
HRANA had previously examined new aspects of obstruction in public vaccination and the reactions to it in a report titled "Society's Anger and Shock; Reactions Following the Disclosure of More Aspects of Corruption, Mismanagement, and Obstruction in Vaccination."
