A Saudi official ruled out the possibility of a meeting between the Iranian and Saudi foreign ministers in the near future.

A Saudi Foreign Ministry official said on Thursday that no meeting between the Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers is planned for the foreseeable future.

In an interview with Reuters, he emphasized that some progress has been made in negotiations with Tehran, but "it is not enough."

The Saudi official continued: "Iran needs to build trust in order to cooperate in the future, and if Tehran is willing to de-escalate tensions in the region, there are several issues that can be discussed."

Hours before this report, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that he may soon meet with his Saudi counterpart in a third country.

Iran and Saudi Arabia, which have severed relations with each other since January 2015, have begun negotiations with Iraqi mediation in recent months, coinciding with efforts by world powers to revive the nuclear deal with Tehran.
