One dead in shooting at church in California

At least one person was killed and four others were seriously injured in a shooting at a church south of Los Angeles, California, police said. Churchgoers were able to stop the gunman before more people were killed or injured.

On Sunday, May 15, a shooting at the Genoa Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, about 45 miles south of Los Angeles, left one person dead and several others hospitalized with serious injuries. All of the victims were adults.

Initial police reports indicate that the shooting was carried out by an Asian man. The Orange County Sheriff's Department said the motive for the shooting was unclear and that police were investigating. The Los Angeles Times reported that the victims were mostly Asian, with most of them from Taiwan.

Churchgoers were able to overpower the attacker and hold him until police arrived. They tied his legs with rope and confiscated two of his weapons. Police say their courageous action prevented more injuries or deaths.

Laguna Woods has a population of about 190,000. The Los Angeles Times reported a heavy police presence in the city.

The shooting at the Laguna Woods church came a day after a gunman killed at least 10 people and wounded three at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York. The FBI's special counsel in the case said police were investigating a right-wing motive and extremist violence in the attack.

The crime has sparked widespread outrage across the United States. The White House said President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden plan to travel to the city on Tuesday to "mourn with the local people."
