Iran Human Rights Organization: 239 Executions in Past Six Months

The Iran Human Rights Organization, based in Norway, announced last week that 239 people were executed in Iran over the past six months, of which only 45 cases were reported by Iran’s official media. The crime of approximately half of those executed was drug trafficking.
The death penalty for drug offenders in Iran also has its critics, and a bill to change this punishment was recently prepared in parliament and is under review. For this reason, the parliament’s judicial commission has asked the judiciary to suspend the execution of drug offenders’ sentences until the bill is finalized and passed.
According to Amnesty International, at least 567 people were executed in Iran last year, and Iran continues to have the highest number of executions in the world after China.
