Letter from 38 Iranian Civil and Political Activists to Biden: Continue Maximum Pressure on Islamic Republic

38 Iranian civil and political activists have sent a letter to US President Joe Biden calling for the continuation of “maximum political, diplomatic and financial pressure” on Iran.

The letter, signed by prominent figures including Manouchehr Bakhtiari, Mohammad Nourizad, Fateme Sepehri and Hashamatollah Tabarzadi, urges the US president to support improvements in human rights conditions in Iran.

The letter also references widespread protests by the Iranian people over the past two years and their violent suppression by the Iranian government, stating: “The theocratic government of the Islamic Republic is on the verge of collapse.”

The authors also describe the desire of the Iranian majority as “achieving a democratic and secular constitution” and have asked the US government to support “the will of the Iranian nation for a non-violent transition to a democratic and secular system, through the holding of free and fair referendums.”

Some of the individuals who signed this letter were previously threatened and arrested for signing a statement calling for the resignation of Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic.
