Migrants in Greece unhappy with forced return to Türkiye

Migrants who set out on the dangerous path of illegal migration with the hope of reaching Europe now have to take a step back. With the implementation of the agreement between Turkey and the European Union, they will be forcibly returned to Turkey instead of taking the path to Western and Northern Europe. Many of them are waiting for their turn to return on the Greek island of Lesbos.
According to FCNN, under the agreement between the Turkish government and the European Union, all illegal immigrants who go from Turkey to the Greek islands must be returned to Turkey. The European Union has borne the cost of returning these immigrants. On the other hand, for every Syrian returned from Greece to Turkey, one Syrian resident in Turkey must be able to legally reside in Europe.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, along with other human rights organizations, has been critical of the recent agreement. “We need to make sure that the necessary measures are in place before carrying out the return operations,” said Boris Cheshirkov, a spokesman for the organization. “To make sure that the migrants are protected. We have serious concerns and we call on Turkey and Greece to take action to take these measures. We still see shortcomings in these two countries,” he said.
The organization has said that it will not participate in the project to return migrants to Türkiye, but will monitor its implementation based on its mandate.
"For tens of thousands of migrants and asylum seekers who have arrived here, Lesbos was an island of hope. For them, it was a stepping stone to Europe. But now many of them have to return to Turkey, a place they have no desire to live," says Euronews correspondent Apostolos Staikos from the Greek island of Lesbos.
