Last-ditch efforts to save Iran nuclear deal at Vienna summit

Countries seeking to save the JCPOA are meeting in the Austrian capital despite the “trigger mechanism” plan. The meeting aims to find a solution to the nuclear dispute with Iran and prevent the return of UN sanctions.

Eyes are once again on Vienna, the capital of Austria, in the nuclear dispute. The countries involved in the 2015 nuclear deal, minus the United States, are trying to find a solution to save the nuclear agreement with Iran.

This is while three European countries, France, Germany, and Britain, have taken steps to activate the "trigger mechanism" in response to Iran's gradual reduction in nuclear commitments.

On Wednesday, February 26, the German news agency reported from Vienna that a meeting of the "JCPOA Salvation Committee" would be held. If the Iranian nuclear case is referred to the United Nations, there is a possibility that international sanctions on Iran will be renewed.

The Vienna meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 26, and will be attended by senior diplomats from Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, along with Iran. A representative will also be sent to the Vienna meeting by the European Union.

The German news agency reported that the purpose of the summit is to find a diplomatic solution to the nuclear dispute with Iran. In response to US sanctions and the “passivity” of European countries, the Islamic Republic of Iran has gradually eased restrictions on uranium enrichment.

Last month, the Islamic Republic announced that it would not adhere to the commitments and obligations foreseen in the nuclear agreement in the fifth round of reducing its JCPOA commitments. This is despite the fact that political observers believe that the Islamic Republic of Iran has not yet taken a step towards a complete violation of the JCPOA.

Britain, France, and Germany also announced on January 14 that they had no choice but to refer the Iranian nuclear case to the Security Council. This is known as a “trigger mechanism,” which could lead to the renewal and resumption of international sanctions against Iran.

Outlook for the Vienna Summit

Despite this, the three European countries involved in the nuclear deal have stated that their priority is to preserve and save the nuclear deal. The 65-day deadline set for the “trigger mechanism” can be extended if the countries involved agree.

Therefore, the Vienna meeting will be held with the presence of senior diplomats from the countries participating in the nuclear deal, minus the United States.

The French news agency also published a report in this regard, stating that a timetable for reaching an agreement on the nuclear dispute has not yet been set.

The news agency quoted a diplomat participating in the Vienna summit as saying that the countries participating in the summit are a long way from reaching an agreement on the nuclear dispute with Iran.

Therefore, it does not seem that the meeting of the countries interested in the nuclear agreement with Iran on Wednesday, February 26, will be able to make a decisive change in the nuclear conflict with this country.
