US calls for immediate release of two French citizens in Iran

A US State Department spokesman on Tuesday called on Iran to immediately release them after Iranian state television broadcast images it said showed details of the detention of two French citizens.

A day earlier, Iranian state television, in a report attributed to the Ministry of Intelligence, had accused two French citizens detained in Iran of "spying" and "contacting" teacher and labor activists to "organize chaos, social disorder, and destabilize the country."

The two French citizens are named Cecile Kohler and Jacques Parry, who, according to the French Education and Training Union, are employees of this institution and had traveled to Iran for "vacation."

The French Foreign Ministry has called the accusations against the two citizens "baseless" and called for their immediate release.
