US sanctions Iran's metal industries

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on 17 companies and one individual linked to Iran's metal industry. The new US sanctions on Iran's metal industry come into effect two weeks before the end of Donald Trump's presidency.

On Tuesday, January 5, the US Treasury Department issued a statement imposing sanctions on 17 companies and one individual related to Iran's metal industries.

According to a statement published on the official website of the US Department of State, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has added twelve Iranian steel and other metal producing companies to its sanctions list.

The new sanctions list includes the names of Iranian shipping companies Hafez Darya Aria Shipping, Bonab Steel Industry Complex, Pasargad Steel Industrial Complex, Alborz Gharb Steel Complex, Zarand Iranian Steel Company, Khazar Steel Industrial Complex, Gilan Steel Complex, Sirjan Iranian Steel Company, and Esfarayen Industrial Complex.

The US has also added Majid Sajdeh, the director of the Hafez Darya Arya shipping company, to its sanctions list.

The new sanctions list also includes the names of three representatives of a large Iranian metal and mining company based in Germany, China, and the United Kingdom.

The US Treasury Department has announced that a Chinese company that specializes in the production of carbon materials will also be subject to new sanctions.

The US State Department statement also stated that “the metal industry is a significant source of revenue for the Iranian regime” and that the wealth generated from it is spent solely on the welfare of Iran’s “corrupt leaders,” the widespread shipment of weapons of mass destruction, and “support for foreign terrorist groups.”

These new US sanctions against Iran come into effect two weeks before the end of Donald Trump's presidency. These sanctions have been imposed under the heading of "human rights violations."
