Mustafa Abdi tests positive for coronavirus in Greater Tehran Prison

HRANA News Agency – Mostafa Abdi, a Gonabadi dervish imprisoned in Greater Tehran Prison, has been infected with the coronavirus. Despite showing respiratory symptoms, no agreement has been reached to send him to the hospital or take medical leave.

According to HRANA News Agency, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, Mostafa Abdi has been infected with the coronavirus in Greater Tehran Prison.

Hassan Abdi, the father of the imprisoned Gonabadi dervish, announced the news on his personal page, saying that this is the third time his son has contracted the coronavirus in prison. According to a source close to Mr. Abdi's family, despite repeated follow-ups and the appearance of respiratory symptoms, no agreement has been reached to send him on medical leave or transfer him to a hospital outside the prison.

Last week, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the Golestan 7th incident, HRANA reported on the latest situation of Mohammad Sharifi Moghadam, Mostafa Abdi, Kasra Nouri, and Abbas Dehghan, four Gonabadi dervishes, in the prisons of Greater Tehran and Adel Abad in Shiraz.

Mostafa Abdi, Darvish Gonabadi, and one of the managers of the Majzooban Noor website were arrested during the Golestan Haftam incident in the early hours of March 2, 2017, and transferred to Greater Tehran Prison.

He was sentenced by the Tehran Revolutionary Court to 26 years and three months of imprisonment, 148 lashes, 2 years of exile to Sistan and Baluchestan, a 2-year ban on leaving the country, and a 2-year ban on membership in political and social groups, parties, and factions, and media activity.

By applying Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the most severe punishment, namely 7 and a half years of imprisonment, can be applied.

Mr. Abdi also had a history of arrest and conviction. In July 2013, he was sentenced to three years in prison by Judge Salavati on charges of gathering and collusion with the intent to disrupt national security, and was released from Evin Prison in December 2015 after serving his three-year sentence.

Mr. Abdi is currently serving his sentence in Hall 2 of the 2nd Brigade 5 of the Greater Tehran Prison. Mostafa Abdi was born in 1985.
