EU extends human rights sanctions against Iran

The European Union extended its sanctions against Iran over its ongoing human rights abuses. The sanctions target 82 individuals and one entity affiliated with the Islamic State.

The Council of the European Union issued a statement on Thursday (April 12) indicating the extension of its sanctions against Iran for one year.

These sanctions were passed in 2011 due to human rights violations in Iran and continued despite the nuclear deal.

The EU sanctions include a travel ban and asset freeze on 82 Iranian officials and an entity affiliated with the Islamic State.

In addition, the export of equipment that could be used to suppress critics and opponents of the government or to monitor and control citizens inside Iran is prohibited.

European Union members disagree on approving new sanctions related to Iran's missile program and the country's role in regional crises.

While France supports the new sanctions, Italy strongly opposes them. Germany and Britain support France's efforts in this regard, while Austria and Spain support Italy's position.
