Revolutionary Court verdicts: A bookseller and two student activists were sentenced to more than 7 years in prison

Student activist Yashar Tohidi announced on Twitter that he, Mohammad Irannejad, a bookseller living in Tehran, and Sara Askari, a student at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Tehran, were sentenced to prison in a joint case.

Yashar Tohidi, a student activist living in Tehran, announced the news in a tweet on Wednesday, February 26, saying that he, as the second defendant in the case, and Mohammad Irannejad, as the first defendant in the case, have each been sentenced to 3 years and 5 months in prison by the Revolutionary Court on charges of "acting against national security through membership in left-wing Marxist groups" and "propaganda against the system."

Mr. Tohidi continued this series of tweets by adding that Sara Asgari has also been sentenced to 6 months in prison and a fine of 7 million Tomans on charges of "spreading lies," which has been suspended for 5 years.

Mohammad Irannejad, a bookseller living in Tehran, also confirmed the news on his Twitter account, writing that the sentence was issued by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court and that only 2 years and 9 months of this sentence will be enforceable on charges of acting against national security through membership in left-wing Marxist groups.

Previously, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, HRANA, had reported in a report that the court hearing on the charges against Yashar Tohidi, Sara Askari, and Mohammad Irannejad would be scheduled for January 17, 2020, through separate notices in Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, and wrote that these citizens had been summoned to Branch 3 of the Evin Prison Investigation Department, headed by Judge Mohammad Mehdi Bara'eh, through a notice in September of this year.
