Political and civil prisoners continue to protest their conditions in Iranian prisons

Protests by political and civil prisoners against their conditions in prisons and the authorities' disregard for the principle of prisoner segregation continue. Recently, a number of female political prisoners have stated in separate messages that they do not have the right to breathe properly and drink ordinary water, and in some cases, they have been threatened with death by a number of prisoners convicted of common crimes.

The situation of political and civil prisoners in the prisons of the Islamic Republic and the failure to implement the principle of separation of prisoners has been one of the main demands of the prisoners, which has always been ignored by the prison authorities. Many political and civil prisoners believe that their transfer to the dangerous prisoners' section is intended to punish and increase pressure on them, and in some cases, they are even denied the right to breathe healthy air and drink plain water, among other things.

Taghi Rahmani, a political activist and husband of imprisoned human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, tweeted, quoting his wife, that in Qarchak Prison in Varamin, the daily needs of every human being, namely the right to breathe healthy air and drink plain water, have been denied.

Shakila Monfared, a political prisoner in Qarchak Prison, said in an audio file obtained by Voice of America that she has received death threats and that she feels unsafe in prison.

The inattention of prison officials to the health status of political, civil, and ideological prisoners has also always been criticized by human rights organizations, and many prisoners have been deprived of access to medicine and treatment despite being infected with the coronavirus, and have even lost their lives, such as the imprisoned poet Bektash Abtin. Arash Sadeghi, a former political prisoner, announced in a tweet that political prisoner Soheila Hijab had contracted the coronavirus in Kermanshah Prison, and wrote that medical services for prisoners in this prison are closed due to the lack of a specialist doctor.

Based on the videos that the cyber group "Adalat Ali" has published from hacking cameras in Evin and Qezel Hesar prisons, incidents such as torture and mistreatment of prisoners and clashes between prisoners and officers are seen. The images were initially considered by judicial and security officials to be fabricated and montages.

Following the publication of these images and the situation of political and civil prisoners in prisons, a decree issued about five days ago asked the new director general of Tehran prisons to work to improve the health of prisons by separating and classifying prisoners, improving their health and culture, and implementing the "Prisoners' Dignity" guidelines.

Over the past four decades, a large number of political prisoners have gone on hunger strikes to make their voices heard, and a number of these individuals have suffered physical injuries or even lost their lives as a result of their hunger strikes.

The poor conditions of prisons and political prisoners in Iran have been under the microscope of human rights activists and criticized by the United Nations for years.
